The flames leapt everywhere. "Mama!" she screamed " Mama! Papa!"
"No!"
Claire fought back the memory of the fire. It had
been almost a month since her parents had died, and she was
still having nightmares. She tried to close her eyes and get
back to sleep, but the flames were always there. Finally she
managed to snuggle down, but only five minutes before the
rooster on the nearby farm woke everybody up.
Claire lay in her bed in the orphanage waiting for her name to be called. "Anna, Beatrice, Claire, Jane, Janet Kara, Nina, rose, Sarah,
Violet!" Mary, the orphanage helper, called out the names in alphabetical order.
Claire rubbed her mother's locket. Then she heard a
noise. When she turned around, nobody was there!
"Claire! Claire where are you? You're oatmeal is getting cold!"
"Coming!" called Claire, running down the stairs.
After breakfast, Miss Olivia checked that everyone had made his or her beds. Claire was the only one who forgot.
"Alright Claire. You have five minutes." Said Miss Olivia.
But when Claire got upstairs, her bed was already made! As she was walking down the stairs to catch up with the others, she saw
her coat lifting itself off its hook! But then it seemed to sense
her watching. She blinked, and when she opened her eyes
her coat was back on the hook.
After church, back at the orphanage, Claire realized
that her locket had been cold when she found her bed made,
when she heard the noise, when she saw her coat lifting itself
off the hook and whenever she had nightmares.
Suddenly she sensed someone behind her. This time when she turned around she saw her parents! They were just like the picture
in her locket, except that her mother wasn't holding a baby in
her arms (the baby in the picture was Claire). This time her
locket went SO icy cold she had to take if off. As soon as she
did, they disappeared.
After checking with Miss Olivia,
Claire walked to the cemetery and buried the locket by her
parent's gravestones. After that, unexplainable things never
happened to her again.
