The Haunted House (Niagara Falls, Canada)
Oct. 2000

This is another "tableau" style of haunted attraction. Patrons lead themselves through darkened hallways setting off sensors that activate the different scenes. The effects were good, like the creepy corpse that opens its coffin, looks around and mournfully asks repeatedly for someone named Frank.

The visuals for this haunted house were great, these people have taken a great deal of time, and put in a great deal of effort. There are, of course, the usual quick scares like blasts of compressed air and loud, sudden noises, but there are no "live actors" to annoy you.

The only problem with this attraction is that it wasn't quite dark enough. It was easy to spot the sensors on the walls, so we could tell when something was coming. It reminded me of that scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark at the beginning in the temple. Indy and his helper come to a part of the stone hallway illuminated by a shaft of light from a break in the ceiling. Indy sagely declares "stay out of the light". After slipping by he sticks his hand out to break the beam, and out shoots a rack of spikes with an impaled corpse. I think they need to hide their sensors better, or use floor mats.

The Haunted House is a potentially spooky trip, especially if you don't see the sensors. It would be a good place to take younger children (in the ten and up range) especially if they wouldn't appreciate "live actors" startling them in the dark.
